NSSR Chetek, WI News – February 26, 2022

CHETEK WINTERFEST”

Another fascinating Day for the NSSR Super Series in Chetek, WI at the Chetek Winterfest Celebration. National Straightline Snowmobile Racing held its second race of the NSSR 2022 Super Series for the “Fastest Show on Ice”. Temperatures ranged from about -8 degrees F in the early morning to 28 degrees F in the afternoon with a slight breeze from the West ranging from 10 to 15 mph during the day. The 1000 feet of shaved ice tracks, 3800 feet shaved with shutdown, were aimed to the East. The racetrack was under beautiful sunny skies all day. Racing action started early at 9:30AM and ended at 4PM.

NSSR worked with Mr. Rob Licht, Winterfest Chairman, of the Chetek Chamber of Commerce to get the event set to coincide with the City’s local events with Winterfest. It was also great to have the Kids Pro Ice Series set up next to NSSR so that spectators could watch some great oval track racing with the future of the sport! Fans and Spectators had the thrill of also watching just over 750 passes down the 1000 foot straightaway! The Bikini Run was run by the Chamber and raised over $18,000 for the Cure for Cancer and Cancer Research!

Racer entries included over 90 entries on the Pro track and just over 160 on the Radar Run track making a great number of entries at 251 hot rods. Great to see so many newer and nice vintage sleds coming out of the garage to make some sweet passes on the pro track and the radar run track. Keep those gems coming!

What great weather to get the spectators to come out and watch some fast machines. The Chamber of Commerce had another record setting day for this event with spectators on the ice! More important, the racers had a great time getting the sleds out and meeting up with fellow racers and spectators. The Radar Run track had some great hot rods including vintage sleds, many running near or above the 100 mph mark.

Our competitors continue to come from throughout the Midwest and included racers for North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan. NSSR is an ISR Affiliated Speed Run organization where you can set World Records on the 1000 foot shaved ice competition. The ideal conditions and nice tail wind set the race day up for a dozen World Records in the Stock and Pro Classes at this race event!

Ms. Holly Bray of Bray Racing came out swinging with a stellar pass on the 2008 Ski Doo XRS 600 with an amazing 112.05 mph to set a new record in the Stock 600 single pipe class. Rod Spindler continues to tune on his Improved Stock 600 Polaris and bumped his record that he just set in Forest Lake last month to a new 123.38 mph! Al Doberstein of CSE Racing rode his F7 Artic cat to a new record of 123.76 mph in the Improved Stock 800 Twin class. Michael Houle of Straightline Performance campaigned a nitrous fed Artic Cat to a new record in the Super Twin Lake Racer class to an impressive speed of 137.27 mph. Four Strokes continue to get more popular and the Stock Four Stroke 3 cylinder record was raised to 100.76 mph by Erik Fagerlin and the Stock 4 cylinder class record was bumped up to 110.02 mph by Jesse Jones. Matthew Cone ran his Yamaha Sidewinder to a record pass of 136.65 mph in the Improved Stock – Stock Turbo Four Stroke class. Travis Junkermeier ran his 2014 Artic Cat Four Stroke to a fast 124.61 mph to raise up his record just set in Forest Lake in January of 2022.

The Vintage Classes are rocking at NSSR and running better all the time! Parent Racing took the 1977 Yamaha SRX to a new World Record Speed of 107.99 mph in the Vintage Stock AA. Trevor Dillon set a new record of 116.88 mph in the Vintage Mod Stock Open Class. Brice Konsela set a new record on his beautiful Polaris Indy 500 to 93.39 mph in the Vintage Mod Stock 441 to 500 class. Erik Fagerlin set a new record on his 1974 GPX Yamaha to an amazing 95.46 mph in the Mod Stock 341 to 440 Free Air Class.

Top Speed of the Day was in the Exhibition Class by Chris Baynes at an amazing 177.86 mph on his Penntek Turbo Four Stroke Artic Cat. This Hot Rod continues to run these numbers very consistently!

All records require a run within 2% to back up their World Record run and over 1000 fans and race supporters were on hand to witness the racing throughout the day! Thanks for Giovanni out of the Chicago Office for displaying his safety equipment at our event with Dainese.com

This NSSR Super Series event in Chetek was hosted by the Chetek Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with many of the local area businesses of the Chetek Area. Also, a big thanks to the City of Chetek, the Chetek Police Department, the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wisconsin DNR for their support and cooperation to make this event happen. I would also like to give a special thanks to Brit who brought the big snow cat to move the snow in the areas of the race track and parking areas.

Ron and Stacy Bray of NSSR want to thank all who participated, supported, and sponsored our 2022 events for just another great year of speed run action. We would like to thank all our sponsors who make these races possible!
