“Ice Blast II – Forest Lake Rewound”

National Straightline Snowmobile Racing held its second race of the NSSR 2019 Super Series on Forest Lake in Forest Lake, MN for the “Fastest Show on Ice”. We were scheduled to be at the Battle on the Bay in Green Bay Wisconsin to run with the ISR World Series of Drag Racing, but mother nature failed to produce the ice needed to pull this event off for this weekend. I know quite a few were disappointed in this getting cancelled and NSSR having to relocate. NSSR was able to pull permits on short notice thanks to the City of Forest Lake, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the DNR in their rapid response to our request to relocate! Only two World Records set and Top Speed at 192.06 mph in 1000 feet!

Temperatures ranged from a -15 degrees F in the early morning to 11 degrees F in the afternoon with only a slight breeze varying at 5 to 10 mph from the East to Southeast during the day. The breeze almost turned to a head wind in the later afternoon, slowing down all speeds on the later runs, Needless to say, it was damp, cold, and breezy all day and only a day fit for the tougher outdoor Ladies and Gentlemen Racers. Despite this the Frozen Assets 4 Hot Rod turned up the heat with its late day pass.

The 1000 foot shaved ice track, 4000 feet shaved with shutdown, was aimed to the Northeast. Temperatures were good to make the needed ice prior to the event. It was great that Ole Man Winter showed up this year to make some great ice!

Racer entries included nearly 60 entries on the Pro track and another 60 on the Radar Run track making a great number of entries at 120 hot rods and just over 500 safe passes between the two shaved ice tracks. These snowmobile race enthusiasts are having a blast running their sleds, vintage rides, kid’s minis, and ATV’s on the Radar Run Track at NSSR. There are nearly 40 classes on the Radar Run track that have trophies presented for first, second, and third places. This race included the second of the three races for the TopGun Challenge.

It was great weather to get the spectators out to watch some fast passes on the ice and the track held up well for racing action all day. The Radar Run track had some great hot rods including vintage sleds, many running near or above the 100 mph mark. Twenty six of the Pro Entries ran at speeds of 125 mph or better in this competition. Our competitors continue to come from throughout the Midwest and included racers for North Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan.

NSSR is the only ISR Affiliated Speed Run Organization where you can set World Records on the 1000 foot shaved ice competition and all require a backup speed within 2%. NSSR Racers posted only two World Records at this race due to the chilly weather and a cross to headwind race day.

Okay, Scott Kostman out of Wisconsin had set a new World Record in the Improved Stock – Stock Turbo Class posting a new speed of 143.72 mph, with a fight battle for the top speed in this class posted by Doyle Swift running a 144.04 mph, but not being able to back it up. Well, Doyle Swift returned with a little better Tune Up on his Artic Cat Turbo Four Stroke sled and posted a new record run right out of the gate of 145.30 mph. He then came out a bit later to even bump up this speed to set the new record at 146.72 mph in the Improved Stock – Stock Turbo Four Stroke Class! Great Job Doyle on this and he has earned this with his hard work over the last year to tune up this hot rod. I don’t think the record in this class is over yet as Scott Kostman has stated he will take it back in Chetek!

WOW and More WOW! Team Ensor and the Warning/Hypersports HRC Four machine returned to go for the World Record in Forest Lake. Making a fast pass of 190.11 mph and then going out at the end of the day with a head wind to bump the new TopGun record to 192.06 mph, the fastest pass ever in a 1000 feet on any speed run race in history! We are told that Chetek with the right conditions might become a new record pushing or breaking the 200 mph mark. Be there to see this happen on February 23rd!

Winner of the TopGun Class was captured by none other than Flyin Ryan Ensor out of Sheridan, Illinois on the new Hypersports HRC 4 machine posting a winning speed of 192.06 mph in the Top Gun Class. The battle will continue in this class as the Shilts/Bikeman Blood Money sled promises to come out swinging in Chetek, Wi. Keep an eye on these sleds as they will tune to bump these numbers up in our upcoming event for the Chetek Winterfest Celebration.

This NSSR Super Series event in Forest Lake, MN was again hosted by Vannellis by the Lake, Woody’s Traction Products, Hypersports, Straightline Performance, PowerMadd, Castle Clothing, ProLine Performance, Lano Equipment, Wahl Bros Racing, Flat Rate Repair, McDonalds’s Liquors, B&L Trailers of Princeton, T&T Lawn and Sports out of Rush City, and Bellman Oil of Bremen, Indiana. Also, a big thanks to the City of Forest Lake, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Minnesota DNR for their support and cooperation to make this event happen.
